Dear fellows, alumni and friends,

2025 marks a very special milestone: 50 years of fellowships at the Herzog August Bibliothek — and what better way to celebrate than by strengthening the vibrant community that has grown around it?

With this HAB-Alumni-Newsletter, we will keep you up to date with the latest news from the HAB – including insights into the work of our fellows, current calls for applications, new publications, upcoming events, and more. We also hope to offer opportunities for you to connect with one another and stay actively involved in the HAB alumni network.

The newsletter will appear twice a year – we hope you enjoy this first edition and we look forward to sharing many more with you!

Warm regards,
The HAB Team

Fellow Feature: Exploring Fame and Portraits with Dr. Ylva Haidenthaller
HAB: What did you work on during your time as a fellow of the HAB?

Ylva Haidenthaller: I was working on my postdoc project on the distribution of printed portraits and their connection to fame culture in the 18th century. I was studying the portrait collection of the HAB and focusing in particular on portraits of actresses, exploring how their production, distribution, and use worked. Of course, like all academics, I also had some side projects, such as finishing long-overdue articles and similar work. For that, access to the secondary literature at the Zeughaus was invaluable.

HAB: What’s your favorite spot or hidden gem in Wolfenbüttel?

Ylva Haidenthaller: I brought my dog to Wolfbenbüttel, so naturally we were walking around quite a bit and enjoyed strolling along the Oker. Otherwise, I would recommend having Kuchen at Café Moena or a Hausbier at Theos. And actually, the garden at the Anna Vorwerk Haus is a gem!

HAB: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to current fellows or visitors to the library?

Ylva Haidenthaller: Be social – create a WhatsApp group and ask others to hang out, have dinner, or do something together. Most people appreciate the invitation but might find it too forward to ask themselves.

HAB: If you had to sum up your time as a HAB fellow in just three words, what would they be?

Ylva Haidenthaller: The Wolfenbüttel Babies (an inside joke, and also the name of the first of many WhatsApp groups I joined)

HAB: Thank you very much, Ylva – enjoy your stay in Wolfenbüttel!

Dr. Ylva Haidenthaller is a historian of art and visual culture. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Lund University
From February 1 to July 31, 2025, Yvla is staying at the HAB as a postdoctoral fellow.
